Show Notes

Friend, when you have a minute to yourself, how do you usually spend it? Is it most natural for you to automatically pick up your phone and hit that button and find yourself lost in the scroll? Do you find yourself with your head in the pantry or the fridge snacking on a few things? Or do you stay up late to get in a couple hours of that new binge-worthy comedy?

If you answered, yes, you aren't alone! I ask because these are the exact things I am prone to do when I feel depleted and empty. I've also learned that these are signs that I am on the edge of burnout. Ugh, I hate that feeling. Yes, friend. Ongoing depletion and emptiness eventually led me to evaluate that typical self-care routine because the scroll, food, and binge-watching are not the answer.

And if they don't work, how do you get refreshed, replenished, and refueled? Well, here's the truth, friend. What satisfies you and what you give your free minutes to is often at drastic odds. So I'm inviting you to revisit this topic with me that I love to chat about. Every summer, Janay and Sarah are going to share their insight and wisdom, and as they talk and as they share their ideas, I want you to listen for ways to exchange typical self-care for life giving soul care.

I want you to find ways to take a break so you can avoid the burnout and still find the momentum you need for your goals!

[2:25] Sarah and Janay talk about components of summer that are extra challenging and discuss ways that we can pursue replenishment, rest, and rhythm in the midst of those challenges. The season of summer is different than any other throughout the rest of the year. They talk about how the lack of the school routine also affects Mama's routines (exercise, work, house responsibilities, etc.)

[8:45] - We want to talk about what are some intentional strategies to combat some of those challenges and to take intentional steps and to cross over those hurdles. Our schedules being so different than they normally are throughout the year, and it's really important to be more intentional about communication. This seems like such a basic tip, but communication an look different for each type of the Enneagram.

[11:04] Organize your schedule based on what's going to be refreshing for you. Do you need to add in a babysitter to be able to get that work done or just to be able to have some mental rest? What are the things that you (specifically in your Enneagram type) need to be refreshing? For some stances such as the 4, 5, 9, that is more withdrawn, they're going to need more of that time away to recharge and replenish. The assertive types 3, 7, 8, they're going to need space to just stop the doing, to just be. As you grow in knowledge of your personality, this is a great time to apply it.

[14:01] Sarah and Janay share their tips for beating the heat during the summer and enjoying all the extra activities you can add to your schedule.

[16:41] Practice kindness to yourself and your body this summer! There's beauty in everyone and the most beauty comes out in the love that you show to your kids and those around you.

[21:06] What is Soul Care? It is not just treating yourself and escaping from what's hard or indulging in things that you think will bring life and fulfillment. It's not seeking rest and nourishment from things that are ultimately not going to give you that true soul care. It is actually taking intentional steps that are going to bring restoration to your soul.

What is it that fills me up? Taking care of our soul is very connected to also mind and body, right? We cannot separate those three things. The greatest commandment that we've been given is to love the Lord our God, with all of our heart, mind, soul, strength, all of it. And so to be able to take the first step towards soul care, we need to turn our attention to what's happening in all of that.

[25:55] What is the connection between soul care and the ability to show up fully for ourselves and our families? What am I striving to do in my own strength? And what am I actually turning to the Lord to do? And so as we move on, to be able to do this for your own soul, first we have to become more aware of our own soul and that is where the Enneagram is such a helpful tool.

In Psalm 139, the Psalm says, "Search me and know me, Lord. See if there is any anxious way within me." The first step towards this is by open-handedly asking the Lord. "Lord, would you search me and would you show me what are the parts of me that are looking to be fulfilled in other places?"

[29:25] It's important to identify your unique soul care needs for your Enneagram type. From a high level, we have the 4, 5, 9 that are withdrawn stance. When it comes to time orientation, they are in the past. The 1, 2, and 6 are in the dutiful/compliance stance, and they are oriented to the present time. The future time orientation, which is the 3, 7, 8 are in the assertive stance.

[43:00] Sarah and Janay share some tips and insights on overcoming guilt and time constraints during the summer.

I know we could chat for a long time about this idea of soul care, and I hope that you do take some action on some of this inspiration, in these ideas.

At least try to implement at least one life-giving rhythm to refresh your spirit this week. Now if you like this, keep your eyes peeled. I know Sarah hinted at it before, but we have something really special in store that aligns with this idea to really help you take things to the next level of soul care and replenishment and refreshment.

And I know we all could use a little bit more of that. So next week's podcast will conclude our summer mini series. I thought it'd be fun to invite more Collective members and have a few of us together on a panel where we answer some of your questions or some general questions that we get a lot from our clients or through emails and different conversations that we're having, whether it's about our faith walk, juggling motherhood and a business, or just other general life questions, and I can't wait to share that episode with you.

So until next time, friend, continue to pursue God's perspective, purpose, and plans for your simply wholehearted life.

The best is yet to come,
