The Bad News & the Good News for Each Type with Jessica Betz, Enneagram 6

One of my favorite things about the coaching experience is the aha moment that a client experiences during certain sessions. And of course there's many aha moments between the sessions that I don't get to witness, but when we dive in after someone is determined or confident of their dominant type, once we dive into the wholehearted sessions, it's so fun to see the light bulb moments go off.

[0:24] Amy talks about what "ideal self" means when it comes to the Enneagram and the wholehearted journey. 

But I wanted to share this special session that I had with Jessica Betts, who's an Enneagram enthusiast and a campus pastor. She's been on the Summit the last couple of years, and also a podcast guest, and she is just amazing. She's fiery. She is deep. She is rich, and she loves the word of God. And she really has a grasp on this topic.

In this conversation, we take the angle of exploring the bad news for each type, and then we pair it with the good news, and ultimately, the invitation for you for each Enneagram type.

[3:58] Amy and Jessica begin the conversation with an introduction and overview of how the Enneagram is a celebration of people. When talking about legacy, Jessica wants to be someone who is deeply loved by Jesus and was fiercely loyal to the people that she loved and celebrated people. At the end of the day, is she a disciple of Jesus who's making more disciples of Jesus?

[7:56] Amy asks Jessica what the big picture and overall message she wants to share. Jessica's short answer is "It's about intentionally, building that intimacy with the Lord, receiving love, and then offering ourselves back to him."

[8:27] Jessica talks about campus ministry and how it correlates to what people out in the world really need, especially in the past few years. She sums up the episode to come in these words: "The bad news is I'm not the good news, God is."

[11:47] She outlines what the first session with a client looks like and how the realization of not trying to grow this ideal you and instead become actual you. If we realize that God is not asking us to become something that he hasn't invited us to be then we can go, "Oh, I'm guilty of these things." So we can acknowledge it and work on it. 

[13:57] Jessica shares a personal example of dismantling our ideas of what the "ideal self" is supposed to be.

[16:27] Type 6's - Now the bad news is there is bad news. We live in a world that is scary, where tragic things happen on a daily basis that feel so out of our control, but the good news in the bad news is there is nothing beyond God's control. He is sovereign, he's holy, he's good, and he goes before you. The invitation that we have for Enneagram Six is experience God's protection. We see it over and over again in in the Bible and in life where there is a moment of trouble that is met by a moment of us seeing how God has overcome the situation in which we have lived or we have experienced. (1 Peter 5:7)

[21:15] Type 7's - The bad news is you will not be able to shield yourself from moments of deep pain or sorrow, but the good news is God is close to the brokenhearted, and He saves the crushed in spirit. Your invitation is to experience God's peace and comfort in the midst of hardship. Keep pushing through and, and see how God's goodness is really working in your life. (Psalm 63)

[26:19] Type 8's - Bad news is you will experience betrayal, but the good news is that our God never leaves us or forsakes us. Your invitation, Enneagram Eight is to experience God's nearness. We serve a God who on the cross, the Bible says that Jesus despised shame and he went to the cross on our behalf so that we would be reconciled to him as he sits on the right hand of the Father. There is no break in relationship as a child of God that could happen that would separate the love of God from you. (Prodigal Son)

[30:58] Type 9's - The bad news is life is filled with conflicts, both internal and external. But the good news is peace isn't something you were meant to create. It is the very presence of our God and he himself will be your peace. Your invitation is to experience God's peace. You don't have to manufacture or create this false sense of peace that can feel like it shatters or can feel like there's a tension in this balance that I have to uphold in order to feel this sense of peace. No, your answer is to sit in the presence of the Spirit, who he himself is your peace. (Fruits of the Spirit)

[34:41] Type 1's - The bad news is perfection is unachievable, mistakes will be made. The good news is you are loved by a perfect God who took your sins on the cross and offers you his holiness in exchange. Your invitation is to receive God's righteousness and trust that the cross is a complete and finished work. There is no blemish or imperfection that can change God's mind about you. You may not feel good enough, and the Lord says, "That's okay, I don't expect you to be." Praise God that our standing with God is dependent on what He's done and not the best I could bring to the table. (Psalm 103:8)

[36:48] Type 2's - The bad news is you'll experience rejection, and the good news in that God's love has no lack. It is constant. It is steady. And as His child, He will never reject you. Your invitation is to receive God's love. It is a deep well that never runs dry. He becomes our covenant. He becomes our promise, so that now all we do is receive the love of God and we can now overflow that. May you believe that you are wanted, and you don't have to manipulate His love to get it. (Lamentations 3:22-23)

[41:42] Type 3's - The bad news is people will not always appreciate what you bring to the table or see your worth. The good news is you don't have to earn your seat at God's table. He invites you freely and always, and you can bring your wariness to him. Your invitation then Enneagram Threes, is to experience God's rest. There is no performance that could change God's mind about you. (Broadway)

[46:39] Type 4's - The bad news is you will be misunderstood, and the good news, Enneagram Four is you are fearfully and wonderfully made by a gracious Father who knows every single part of you and calls you His delight. Your invitation is to experience God's delight in you by watering your grass. When we let the word water our soul, when we let the Word begin to water the grass that God has faithfully planted and called us to. What we begin to see is we are fearfully and wonderfully made. We begin to see that God delights in us. (Children of Israel)

[52:06] Type 5's - The bad news is you will experience slack. The good news is our God withholds no good thing from his children. Your invitation is to experience God's provision in moments where you feel depleted, exhausted, or overwhelmed. Because the most gracious thing that God could do for us is create a dependence on him because there is no lack in Him.
